PLACE MECHOUAR

Place Mechouar is a large square built at the end of the 19th century that was once a place of allegiance where religious ceremonies and royal speeches were held in public. Representing the heart of the city of Tiznit, Place Mechouar is close to the old medina of Tiznit. It provides access to the Khalifa Palace and is surrounded by small shops, restaurants and cafes as well as cheap hotels. On the market day, which is held every Thursday, Place Méchouar takes the look of a grand bazaar and welcomes merchants and artisans who display their merchandise. This polygonal square is often compared to the Jemaa El Fna square in Marrakech and also to Jenan Jamaa which is in the town of Taroudant. Being one of the main areas of the city of Tiznit, the council of the city works to maintain and preserve this heritage, by which one can access the El Koufa square, the Zerktouni square and the Mellah.
